To create a t-shirt design with AI, start from a validated niche, write a prompt that sets the subject, style, colors and a plain background, generate several versions, then retouch the best one: text added by hand, background removed, colors adapted to fabric, and the file upscaled to 4500 × 5400 pixels. AI does the first half of the work; the second half, which makes the design printable and sellable, is yours. Here is the full method.

Step 1: start from a niche, not an image
A beautiful drawing with no audience does not sell. Start from a precise niche (a job, a sport, an animal, a hobby) and a message that audience wants to wear. Research tools like Flying Research help you spot what already sells: see our Flying Research tutorial.
Step 2: write a prompt built for print
A good t-shirt prompt has five parts:
- Subject: "a cat in samurai armor drinking coffee".
- Style: vector illustration, 80s retro, engraving, kawaii, linocut…
- Palette: 3 to 5 colors that suit the shirt color.
- Composition: "centered, clean silhouette, no scenery".
- Background: "plain white background" or "plain black background", easier to remove.
Example: "Vector illustration of a cat in samurai armor drinking coffee, 80s retro style, orange, cream and navy palette, centered, clean outlines, plain white background, no text." More examples are in our article 30 AI prompts for t-shirts.
Step 3: generate, compare, choose
Generate at least 8 to 12 versions. Compare them small (like a Redbubble thumbnail): the silhouette must stay readable. Also check the details that give AI away: fingers, eyes, objects melting into each other.
Step 4: add the text yourself
Even if some recent models write well, text is still safer added in design software (Canva, Photopea, Affinity, Illustrator, the Vexels editor…). You control the font, spelling and hierarchy. Readability rules are in our guide to typography t-shirt design.

Step 5: prepare the print file
- Remove the background and check the transparency on a colored backdrop.
- Upscale the image: most generators output around 1,000 to 2,000 pixels, and a t-shirt needs 4500 × 5400. See our guide to upscaling and vectorizing AI images.
- Adapt the colors: avoid very subtle gradients and near-transparent areas, which print poorly.
- Export as a transparent RGB PNG.
Step 6: check before you publish
- 100% zoom: no blurry pixels, no halo around the cut-out.
- Mockup on a light and a dark shirt.
- Trademark search on the text, and a check that no known character appears.
Keep a folder with the prompt, the raw image and your final version. If a platform ever asks where a design came from, you can show your work.
Frequently asked questions
What image size do I need for an AI t-shirt design?
Aim for 4500 × 5400 pixels as a transparent PNG. Generated images are smaller, so upscale them with a dedicated tool before uploading.
Can AI write the text on the t-shirt?
Some recent models write correctly, but adding text in design software is still more reliable for the font and spelling.
How many versions should I generate for one design?
At least 8 to 12, then compare them at thumbnail size. Readability when small is the best way to choose.
In short
AI gives you a starting illustration in seconds; your added value is the niche, the text, the composition and the file preparation. Follow the six steps for every design and you will get t-shirts that look designed, not generated.
